When asked by guests if we had always wanted to be Innkeepers, the answer is no. We like to say that we think Innkeeping found us and that this is, with all due humility, what we were born to do!
Ray grew up in Fall River with his 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He graduated from Durfee High School and was 89th in his class alphabetically! After graduation from Bridgewater State University, Ray was a 7th grade English teacher. Ray realized that wasn’t for him and went in another direction working in corporate America for Mattel Toys.
Judy grew up in Hialeah, FL and moved to Massachusetts during her teenage years. After moving back to MA in 1966 upon graduating from high school went to Northeastern University. She held various jobs at Liberty Mutual, Alden Products and Pharmacy Corp. of America where she ended her career there as billing and customer service supervisor.
While on a Mattel-sponsored business trip to the Cayman Islands, the idea of owning an inn began. After we returned home from the trip, we started looking at various options, attended aspiring innkeepers’ conferences and stayed in numerous inns in New England. In the end, we thought hospitality would suit us. Our home in Brockton was always hosting large gatherings. Family cookouts, holiday parties and weddings to name a few.
While Ray was looking in the Real Estate section of the Boston Globe, he came upon the ad for The Old Harbor Inn in Chatham, MA. We came to stay at the inn on a Saturday in April and instantly fell in love with the property. We came back the next day and made an offer and moved to the inn on June 5, 1996, bought it on June 6, 1996 and opened to a full house on June 7, 1996.
The rest, as they say, is history. Going back to the statement of “we think Innkeeping found us” we truly believe that this is what we were meant to do. We’ve made lifelong friends and delight in meeting new guests and welcoming repeat guests. Chatham and Cape Cod are amazing places, and we are happy to call it home and to share our love of the area with our guests. We live at the inn and are always available to help you plan your day or serve you breakfast.
