What is the best time of the year to go Whale Watching?

Did you know that Cape Cod is a world-class destination for whale watching? Cape Cod Bay has a significant whale population, and you have the opportunity to see a variety of whale species – in fact, Whale Watching is one of the best things to do on Cape Cod! While you may see breaching whales from the shore, hopping on a boat tour will give you a closer look. We’ve answered all of the most common questions to help you get the most out of your Whale Watching Cape Cod excursion.

What is the Best Time to Go to Cape Cod for Whale Watching?

Around mid-April, Cape Cod whale watching season begins, and it runs through October. The best time to see the whales, though, is from June through September because this is their peak migration period. Hundreds of the gentle giants migrate to their summer feeding grounds off the Cape Cod coast. As the season comes to an end in late October, the whales begin to migrate south to the Caribbean Sea for the winter. Any time of day is best for Whale Watching adventures because these creatures are active all the time.

Why is Whale Watching such a popular activity on Cape Cod?

Cape Cod is a world-class destination for whale watching because of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a rich feeding ground just off of Cape Cod that attracts a large percentage of the world’s whale population annually. Stellwagen Bank consistently ranks among the top 10 places on the planet to see whales in their natural habitat. Provincetown is the closest port to access the Stellwagen Bank.

Where To Go Whale Watching on Cape Cod?

We highly recommend going to Provincetown, due to the proximity of its port to Stellwagen Bank. Whale sightings often occur as soon as you leave port partly due to Provincetown’s location 40 miles out at sea. Whale watching here has a definite advantage: the surrounding waters are known for a high whale population as well as amazing diversity in aquatic life, including dolphins, sea birds, and other sea creatures. As you depart P-town harbor you will also enjoy views of Cape Cod National Seashore’s spectacular beaches, lighthouses, and historic landmarks.

What are the best Cape Cod Whale Watching Tours?

Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch of Provincetown is by far the best tour you can choose on Cape Cod. Known as “New England’s First and Finest Whale Watch,” the Dolphin Fleet tours are guided by a trained, experienced naturalist that will help you identify whales and other animals like dolphins and sea birds. Dolphin Fleet guarantees both your satisfaction and comfort when embarking on one of their Whale Watching excursions. Along with two decks and an indoor heated and air-conditioned cabin, there is also an informational science center on board. They offer up to 10 trips daily to fit into your schedule. For some of the best photos, book sunset trips only available from June through August. We highly recommend the Dolphin Fleet! It’s only about 50 minutes from the Inn and well worth the trip. The whale watch is approximately 3-4 hours.  We recommend reserving online prior to your trip. Tickets are $70 for adults, 62 and older pay $60.

What to expect to see on the trip?

You’re very likely to see humpback whales in the warmer months. Some other whale sightings to look out for are finback whales, pilot whales, minke whales, right whales, and the occasional dolphin, porpoise, and seal. You may even learn a thing or two about Provincetown’s whaling history as you observe the very species that were targeted for their meat, oil, and blubber.

What should I bring with me on my Cape Cod Whale Watching trip?

Suggested items to bring include sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, and most importantly, a camera! It can get windy on the water, so take a jacket or sweatshirt for warmth. It won’t hurt to bring something that’s water-resistant in case conditions become wet. Wear sneakers with good traction.
